Survey: Response by Siegfried

1. — How would you most succinctly define anarchism? Is there a shared “anarchist project” — and, if so, how would you characterize it?

I would define anarchism as a tendency of thought which regards, as its core tenets: liberty to preserve equality and fraternity, equality to preserve fraternity and liberty, fraternity to preserve liberty and equality. All anarchists acts and ideas, to truly be considered anarchist, share these ideals.

2. — What is the relationship between anarchism and the concept of anarchy?

The concept of anarchy and anarchism may be interpreted in many ways. Anarchism has little to do with chaos. Anarchism has a lot to do with anarchy. Anarchism had everything to do with a chaotic variety of anarchism to enrich itself.

3. — What is the value of tradition within the anarchist milieus and what might be its uses?

Tradition as a limiting factor is not to be taken positively. Tradition as a reservoir of ideas and practices, however, is.

4. — What, specifically, is the role to be played in the present by the anarchist literature — whether theoretical or artistic — of the past?

As entertainment, as propaganda, and as a help to foster an understanding of historical thought. But, by far, I find it a testament to those who can disagree and simultaneously have the ability to help each other. As even the most extreme militant anarchist will find refuge in the company of an individualist anarchist.

5. — What are the most significant challenges facing anarchists — and anarchism, as you understand it — in the present?

Anarchism, as an idea like any other, faces problems which ideas will certainly face. And, as a radical idea, its main foe will be the power of the hegemony of the status quo. The status quo uses their power to misdefine and misdirect. The status quo has spread the idea that liberty, equality and fraternity are mutually contradictory. The status quo sticks with the idea that the state is different. That, the state is not a factor which could disrupt equality. Dispelling that is anarchism biggest challenge.

6. — How would you characterize the present state of anarchist activity (outside the realm of theory and propaganda)?

As a target for misinterpretation, As too few in-between to make any changes in the opinion of the broad public, and, As a heart-warming example of human solidarity and kindness.

7. — How would you characterize the present state of anarchist theory and propaganda?

As an ad-hoc mix of many ideas, presented in a chaotic blend of hostile and friendly to its own and others.

8. — What are the most urgent changes to be made in anarchist practice moving forward?

Urgent in itself not. Ideologies are a long march to hegemony or death, with the occasional disaster that presents one of the outcomes early. Anarchist practice would have to focus more on bringing the state out of the realm of exception, that is, not attacking it aggressively, but undermining its position of the patriarch people expect it to be. The animosity towards the vote should be done away with as well. But not used as a way to take part in the state, instead, as a way to sabotage its acts against grassroots organisations.

9. — What is the role of some kind of “anarchist unity” moving forward? What form could or should that unity take?

Anarchist unity is, as unity between movements who pride themselves on liberty, to be achieved only in a willingness to cooperate. Which, easier said than done, focuses more on the aspect of solidarity than synthesis.

10. — What are the greatest needs with regard to new anarchist theory, propaganda, literature and art?

Simply getting more exposure. And, focusing less on those who already want – and focusing more on those who may want.

11. — Do you currently identify with any particular anarchist current or tendency — and, if so, how do you characterize your position?

Proudhonien mutualist. Labour is not to be measured in time, which I consider one of Proudhon’s greatest ideas. The road to social revolution is going to be a long one.

12. — What additional questions would it be useful to pose to a broad anarchist audience?

Positions which would present potential splits in the anarchist audience.
